Written with a parallel storyline, The Cave for the Fish juxtaposes a luminous underwater world with a rocky island isolated in the mystical sea. The main character, the Fish Child, lives in a dark workshop on the seafloor where she scavenges for pearls and artifacts by the light of a school of glowing fish. Lonely, she climbs a sea tower trying to reach the upper realms of the ocean, hoping to find a source of light and a world beyond what she has known.
Her future friend the Diver lives on a parched island named the Fishbowl for its desolate topography and remote location in the tempestuous waters. Weary of an environment in which soil has turned to sand and verdant life is vanishing, the Diver ventures out onto the open ocean beyond her home and finds another world as she dives downwards. Eventually meeting each other, the Fish Child and the Diver connect by sharing offerings from their worlds, trading spiraling shells and iridescent pigments for clay and wood sculptures, teaching each other to appreciate the mysticism of the deep and the bright reality of life on land. Their unique friendship inspires the Diver to build a workshop above the water, evoking the Fish Child’s home on the seafloor and inextricably connecting the bleak island with the spirit of the sea.
Moving forward with this project, we aim to expand into multidisciplinary forms of storytellling. If you are interseted in reading the text and learning more please contact us at caveforthefish@gmail.com.
